Rhonda Schwab has been the boat repair person for our kayak school, Body Boat Blade International, and many of our students for the past several years. Rhonda has consistently done great work for us and has even satisfied Shawna’s artistic sensibilities of adding stars, moons, and galaxies in repairing her boats! If ever we have had an issue with a repair, Rhonda has backed up her guarantee of making sure that we are 100% happy with the final repair.

I was encouraged by kayaker friends in the Mountaineers to try surf kayaking, so I purchased an IC surf boat, a Mega Rio Jester, off of Craig’s List. The boat was in pretty good condition but needed gel coat and Sea tape line repairs on the stern and the cockpit combing reattached. My friends recommended Rhonda at Kayakers Go Coastal as an expert kayaker who knows how to repair kayaks. I called Rhonda and arranged to bring the boat to her shop, and when I came back a couple of days later the stern looked great and the cockpit combing was solid. That weekend I brought the Rio Jester to Hobuck beach to play in the waves for the first time. I had a great time, but sometime during the day, the cockpit combing had come loose. I called Rhonda when I got home and she was emphatic about making it right at no extra cost. I brought the boat back and Rhonda added more material to the cockpit combing and a couple of weeks later I brought the boat to Crescent Beach and over the course of the weekend with many wipeouts and rolls, the cockpit combing held firm. It’s great knowing that with Kayakers Go Coastal, Puget Sound kayakers have an expert resource for kayak repairs and enhancements.

I’ve had several repairs done by Rhonda at Kayakers Go Coastal and have always been delighted at the outcome. She gladly shares her knowledge of boats to review my repair options. I haven’t found a type of repair to stump her yet.

The Mariner Express is renowned for its graceful efficient hull, but not so much for its on-deck rigging. And the XL, without a front or rear bulkheads can take on a bit of water, even with float bags and gear. While on an outing with the Seattle Kayak Club, I saw a sister ship, the Elan, with proper rigging and inquired where/how the work was done. “Rhonda is your man.” was the enthusiastic reply by several in the group. I contacted Rhonda about the adjustments I was considering. More important than letting me know what she could do, Rhonda advised me about my proposed changes that would compromise the boat’s safety or performance. That’s what I go to an expert for – experience and advice on the best way to accomplish my goals! The work quality is superb. The off-white Express now has black accents with a keel strip and black deck rigging. The Red/Yellow XL also looks “dressed up” with its black keel strip and now sports a Freedom 500 water pump. If conditions knock me over in that, I want to focus on getting back in and underway, not pumping a boatful of water. I now have lines I can hang on to when out of the boat, a place to attach a compass, and a location for a paddle caddy. Let the adventures begin!

I took Rhonda a very broken boat. I wondered if it was even worth it to fix it. Rhonda assured me it was fixable. She worked many hours and made the boat look brand new again. The gel coat color she mixed is the same color of the original gel coat. The boat is more structurally sound than before the damage occurred. Rhonda took her time and worked to make the boat look exactly how she wanted it to. Thank you, Rhonda! The boat looks great.

The boat really looks great. With all those sites letting water where water shouldn’t be. Accolades for finding so many hidden leaks! I’m so grateful for your efforts and appreciate the pressure testing. Thanks for color-matching the skeg area. I love being in that boat; it’s a wonderful kayak –

I was playing in a rock garden off Toleak Point this summer, in my Nordkapp, when I got surfed backward, hard, into a big rock. My boat hung up in the rock for a while and was clobbered a few more times … and when I finally washed out of the slot my paddling partners gathered round with very worried looks on their faces. “Ummm,” they said, in the way doctors do when they’re about to tell you they’ve found a malignant lump, “there are LOTS of holes in your boat. It took a couple rolls of duct tape to temporarily patch up my kayak enough for me to limp back to La Push, but I don’t think any of us really believed the boat would ever return to sea. But then Rhonda worked her magic. Do you know how hard it is to match faded Nordkapp yellow? Rhonda did that, patched at least six big holes, put on a new keel strip, added an underdeck pump holder, and generally made my boat beautiful again. All for a very reasonable price. Thanks Rhonda, I’m so happy to have my boat back in one piece.

Rhonda is knowledgeable about all types of kayak repairs and friendly. She placed a keel strip on one of our boats a few years ago. She is repairing one of our boats with fiberglass cracking and a pretty big chip that broke off the bottom… we’re getting a keel strip on this one too

I have seen much of Rhonda’s work and knew if I ever needed repairs, she would be my go-to person. When I decided my Romany needed a full keel strip and other repairs, I contacted Kayakers Go Coastal, I delivered my boat, at the height of the season, and Rhonda was very keen on getting the work done and me back in the water (That made two of us). I had my boat back within a week. The workmanship is something to admire.
I was also impressed with the care that Rhonda took when setting my boat up for repairs. She took the time to ask the questions to be sure that I was getting what was requested. I also felt that her work area is first-rate. It is clean and organized. She is also a great resource for anything pertaining to paddling. After seeing the repairs and work that Kayakers Go Coastal is capable of, other paddling friends have entrusted their boats to her.

Rhonda does fabulous work repairing kayaks and adding keel strips. She has worked on three of my boats: repaired spider cracks, reattached a front bulkhead, and added a black keel strip on my Nordkapp, patched holes and added a white keel strip on my Tempest, and I purchased a used Pintail with a green color matched keel strip she added. The work was flawless, I had to look very closely to find where Rhonda repaired the damage. Beautiful.
